The Pennine Way is a National Trail in England, with a small section in Scotland. The trail stretches for 268 miles from Edale, in the northern Derbyshire Peak District, north through the Yorkshire Dales and Northumberland National Park and ends at Kirk Yetholm, just inside the Scottish border.
It is very famous for trail runners to race along and over the past years it has been a key route for FKT's to take place. Dufton and High Cup Nick are both situated along the Pennine Way and take in some of the most scenic views.
We will start from Dufton village and take you up to Dufton Pike which is 163 metres from Dufton and boasts views of the North Lakes and High Cup Nick, we will then continue along the Pennine Way to High Cup Nick which is 519 metres from Dufton. You can see miles of landscape on the Pennine Way which includes the highest point Cross Fell, Dufton Fell, Murton Fell and the military training area Warcop Fell.
This route has been designed to show you some of the best of the Pennine Way and why it is an iconic location to run along.
ROUTE
We will cover 25km with 731 metres of total elevation (15.5 miles/ 2,398ft), our highest point will be High Cup Nick. The terrain will be a mixture of grassy fells, compact trails with rocks, bogs and asphalt.
Listed in the 100 best Pathfinder walks in Britain, High Cup Nick has been described as a difficult walk of 8 miles, with an elevation of 1445 feet. The famous fellwalker Alfred Wainwright describes High Cup as "a great moment on the journey" in his book Pennine Way Companion.
PACE
We'll be aiming for a sociable pace for all. We will run as a group leaving no one behind, but experience of hills would be beneficial. You are welcome to try and push yourselves to the top of the hills or find that low gear and keep it steady, but we will wait for all at the top of the hills and carry on together.
Allow 5.5 hours for the run itself, as conditions and group ability may vary.
KIT
Please make sure you have the right kit for this run; trail running shoes, spare layers, gloves and waterproofs. We make this mandatory as the weather can change quickly when you are higher up on the fells. If you need any help with this please do not hesitate to contact us via the website.
Please bring a minimum of 1L water; snacks (always) recommended, and always plan for the time out rather than the distance.
*We will provide hand sanitiser before and after the run. Please also bring your own hand sanitiser, as part of our requirement to run, as there may be several gates on route*.
