About the event

Play in the Wild UK has partnered with Pure Outdoors Events to provide you with Guided Race Recce Runs for the Grand Tour of Skiddaw.

The Grand Tour of Skiddaw is a 44 mile, fully way marked ultra trail race taking in the beautiful Northern Lake District with a climb up the mighty Skiddaw at the approximate halfway point, giving a total of 7136 feet of ascent. The route is almost entirely run on public footpaths and bridleways, starting and finishing at Lime House School near Dalston. It then follows the River Caldew, winding through fields and woods until you reach Caldbeck. From here, the scenery changes to the stunning and remote feeling Caldbeck Fells, where you make your way past Skiddaw House to the car park at Latrigg. The climb up Skiddaw follows, after visiting the summit you descend via Longside Edge giving fantastic views over Bassenthwaite. Then you contour round passing through Orthwaite, Branthwaite and Fell Side before the route brings you back to Caldbeck and the return journey to Lime House School along the banks of the River Caldew

We will be providing recce runs which will cover two sections of the route to ensure you get the full experience of what the Grand Tour of Skiddaw has to offer. To ensure we provide the best experience we will start and finish both days at the same location in Caldbeck. We will cut this route into two parts allowing you to run the whole route over one weekend from the same starting location. Day 1 will be the longest as its a full loop of the more mountainous part of the route which takes you past Skiddaw House, over Little Man and Skiddaw before returning back to Caldbeck, approx 28.5 miles long. Day 2 will be an easier day for tired legs, an out and back covering the leg from the start to Caldbeck (but starting in Caldbeck) approx 15.5 miles.

Both runs will be supported by our two coaches Mags May and Howard Dracup who are UKA/UESCA Qualified Ultra Running Coaches, Outdoor First Aid Trained and have been running the ultra distance on trails/mountains for over 9 years. They have a wealth of knowledge of racing and lots of experience on how to prepare for an ultra, what kit to use, how to fuel well and are keen to share their passion for running this distance with you on the day. They live in Cumbria and Skiddaw is one of their favourite routes to run so you are in good hands.

These runs are open to all abilities, these are for anyone who is signed up the the race, anyone who is keen to explore the route and anyone that would like to join for a social weekend exploring the Cumbria Way.

The route:

Day 1- Circular route 28.5 miles/ 46km

Day 2 - Out and back 15.5miles/ 25km

There will be a mandatory kit list provided to you before the event takes place along with a PARQ/Health Questionnaire, but please ensure you have the basics:

-Trail shoes

-Windproof/Waterproof jacket

-Waterproof trousers

-Running pack with capacity for 1LTR water

-Fuel for the time not the distance

-Spare base layer and hat/buff/gloves

-Spare warm upper layer

This recce will be limited to 12 people and will only run with 6+ people signed up. Unfortunately we are unable to provide accommodation for this recce but there are lots of options around Caldbeck and the surrounding areas. Because we are located in one area it will be easier to stay in the same accommodation for the whole weekend.
